The Royal Hotel was situated on the junction of London Road and Abbeydale Road and regularly put on gigs in the function room, especially during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. At one point it was known as the Ritblat Tube, run by Steve Baker, who coined the title based on his liking for the London Tube logo.
Bands played in the function room at the rear and the door was usually manned by Richard & Lawrence of the “Daily Planet”. Pulp played there on 24th September 1980, supporting Vital. It was a popular venue with support acts often being formed spontaneously from members of the audience. The pub has since been converted into flats.
